Dar es Salaam. Mahakama ya Mkoa wa Kinondoni imemhukumu kifungo cha miaka 30 jela Elisha Mushi (22), mkazi wa Ubungo Kibangu baada ya kuthibitika kumlawiti mtoto wa miaka minne kanisani.

Mushi, ambaye alikuwa akifanya kazi ya kufundisha watoto kanisani anadaiwa kutenda kosa hilo Februari 19, mwaka huu katika Kanisa la Embassy Kingdom.

Hukumu hiyo ilitolewa juzi na hakimu mkazi wa mahakama hiyo, Ester Mwakalinga baada ya kuwasikiliza mashahidi saba wa upande wa mashitaka, akiwamo mtoto mwenyewe, mama mzazi pamoja na mchungaji wa Kanisa la Embassy Kingdom aliyekiri kumfahamu mama mzazi wa mtoto aliyetendwa.

Mashahidi wengine ni daktari wa Hospitali ya Sinza Palestina aliyempima mtoto huyo pamoja na askari wa Kituo cha Polisi Osterbay. Akisoma hukumu hiyo, Hakimu Ester alisema kutokana na ushahidi uliotolewa na mtoto mwenyewe pamoja na vielelezo vilivyowasilishwa, mahakama imejiridhisha pasipo shaka yoyote kuwa mshtakiwa huyo alitenda kosa analotuhumiwa nalo.

“Kutokana na vielelezo vilivyowasilishwa, ikiwemo ripoti ya daktari (PF3) na ushahidi wa mama na mtoto mwenyewe, mahakama imejiridhisha pasipo shaka kuwa mshtakiwa alitenda kosa hilo, hivyo inakutia hatiani kwa kosa la kulawiti,” alisoma Hakimu Ester.

Wakili wa Serikali Mwandamizi, Hilda Kato aliiomba mahakama kutoa adhabu kali kwa mshtakiwa huyo ili iwe fundisho kwa watu wenye tabia ya kufanya vitendo vya udhalilishaji na kikatili kama hivyo katika jamii.

Hata hivyo wakati wa kujitetea, Mushi alisema hakuwahi kufanya kosa kama hilo na kuiomba mahakama imsamehe na kumwachia huru kwa kuwa yeye hahusiki kutenda kosa hilo.

Hakimu Ester alisema ili iwe fundisho kwa watu wenye tabia za kikatili na za udhalilishaji kama hizo, mshtakiwa atatumikia kifungo cha miaka 30 jela na kama hajaridhishwa na hukumu hiyo anayo haki ya kukata rufaa. Katika kesi ya misingi, inadaiwa kuwa Februari 19 katika Kanisa la Embassy Kingdom ambako mshitakiwa alikuwa akifanya kazi ya kuwafundisha watoto (Sunday school) alilawiti mtoto wa miaka minne kinyume cha sheria za nchi.

India saw record new jumps in Covid-19 cases and deaths on Thursday, dashing tentative hopes that the catastrophic recent surge was easing.

Health ministry numbers showed 3,980 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the national total to 230,168, and 412,262 new cases, bringing India’s caseload since the pandemic began to 21.1 million.

The rise follows several days of falling case numbers that had raised government hopes that the virus surge may have been easing.

Having hit a high of 402,000 last Friday, the daily number of cases eased to as low as 357,000 before creeping up again on Tuesday.

Senior health ministry official Lav Aggarwal had told reporters on Monday that there was a “very early signal of movement in the positive direction”.

The sharp rise in cases since late March has overwhelmed hospitals in many places, with fatal shortages of beds, drugs and oxygen.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has resisted imposing a new lockdown although several regions including the capital New Delhi, Bihar and Maharashtra have imposed local shutdowns.

Until now the worst-hit areas have been Delhi and Maharashtra but other states including West Bengal, Kerala and Karnataka are now reporting sharp rises.

K. Vijay Raghavan, the Indian government’s principal scientific advisor, said Wednesday that the country of 1.3 billion had to be ready for another wave of infections after the current one.

“Phase 3 is inevitable given the high levels of circulating virus. But it is not clear on what timescale this phase 3 will occur. We should prepare for new waves,” Raghavan told a news conference.

With the government facing criticism as patients die outside hospitals, consignments of oxygen and equipment have been arriving from the United States, France, Britain, Russia and other countries in recent days.

But India will need yet more oxygen from other countries to fight the surge until numbers stabilise, another government official said Monday.

“We did not and do not have enough oxygen,” the top government official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “If we could get more oxygen more lives would be saved.”

Overnight, 11 people died in a hospital near the southern city of Chennai after pressure dropped in oxygen lines, the Times of India reported on Thursday, the latest in a string of similar incidents.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has called for “urgent” international action to prevent “a worsening human catastrophe” across South Asia.

It highlighted the case of Nepal, where it said “many hospitals are full and overflowing” with Covid-19 patients and the daily caseload is 57 times higher than one month ago.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) said on Wednesday meanwhile that the UK strain of COVID-19 was more dominant in north India, while the new Indian variant known as B.1.617 was more prevalent in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat, reports said.

Hatahivyo utajiri wa bilionea wa Tanzania Mo umedaiwa kupungua hadi dola bilioni 1.6.

Katika ripoti hiyo mfanyabiashara tajiri nchini Nigeria Aliko Dangote ameorodheshwa kwa mara ya tisa mfululizo, kuwa mtu tajiri zaidi barani Afrika .

Dangote mwenye umri wa miaka 62 ambaye anafanya biashara ya Simiti, Sukari na unga wa ngano ana utajiri wa dola Bilioni 10.1.

• Watu wanane matajiri kupindukia duniani

Dangote anafuatiwa na mfanyabiashara wa Misri Nassef Sawaris ambaye aliongeza utajiri wake kutoka dola bilioni 6.3 hadi dola bilioni nane.

Mfanyabiashara huyo anamiliki asilimia 5.7 ya hisa za kamapuni ya viatu ya Adidas . Ongezeko la hisa za Adidas liliomuongezea dola bilioni moja nukta tano katika akaunti yake.

Bilionea aliyeorodheshwa katika nafasi ya tatu ni raia wa Nigeria Mike Adenuga ambaye utajiri wake unatokana na sekta ya mawasiliano na mafuta. Kampuni yake ya mawasiliano ya simu Globacom ndio ya tatu kwa ukubwa nchini Nigeria ikiwa na wateja milioni 43.

Alijipatia utajiri wake wa kwanza akiwa na umri wa miaka 26 akiuza kanda za viatu na vinywaji.

Bilionea aliyeorodheshwa wa nne barani Afrika ni mfanyabiashara wa almasi na raia wa Afrika Kusini Nicky Oppenheimer.

Nicky ambaye ni mrithi wa mali ya familia yake ya Oppenheimer ana utajiri wa dola bilioni 7.7.

Familia yake imekuwa ikihusika na uuzaji wa almasi.

Isabel dos Santos mwenye utajiri wa dola bilioni 2.2 amedaiwa kujipatia utajiri wake wakati babake alipokuwa rais ambapo alijipatia hisa katika makampuni mengi ya Angola pamoja na benki.

Mwanamke huyo ambaye ametajwa kuwa mwanamke tajiri zaidi barani Afrika amesema kwamba anamiliki hisa kutoka kampuni zilizopo Ureno, ikiwemo Telecom na runinga ya nyaya.

Msemaji wa Isabel aliambia jarida la Forbes kwamba ni mfanyabiashara huru .

Watu matajiri zaidi duniani

Katika orodha ya watu wanne matajiri zaidi duniani, Bernard Arnault amempiku Jeff Bezos na kuwa mtu tajiri zaidi duniani akiwa na mali yenye thamani ya dola billioni 116.5.

Bernard ndiye mmiliki wa kmapuni ya mitindo ya Louis Vuitton na Sephora akiwa na idadi ya mitindo chapa.

Jeff Bezos anayemiliki mali yenye thamani ya dola bilioni 115.6 alitangazwa kuwa mtu wa pili kwa utajiri zaidi duniani. Bezoz ambaye anatalakiana na mkewe baada ya kuishi pamoja kwa miaka 25 katika ndoa ametangaza kwamba atahamisha asilimia 4 ya hisa zake za Amazon kwa mtalaka wake.

Watatu katika usanjari huo ni Bill Gates mwenye mali yenye thamani dola bilioni 110.6. Yeye na mkewe Melinda wanasimamia wakfu wa Bill na Melinda Gates , ukiwa ndio wakfu mkubwa wa kibinafsi duniani.

Wakfu huo hufanya kazi kuimarisha hali ya afya duniani mbali na kutoa fursa sawa kwa walimwengu.

Tajiri wa nne ni Warren Buffett mwenye mali yenye thamani ya dola bilioni 90.6b. Akijulikana kwa jina maarufu kama Oracle Omaha , Buffet ni mmojwapo wa wawekezaji waliopata ufanisi mkubwa zaidi duniani.

Akiwa mwana wa mbunge wa zamani wa Marekani alinunua hisa akiwa na umri wa miaka 11 na kulipa kodi akiwa na umri wa miaka 13.

Barani Afrika na kwengineko duniani, watu matajiri wamepitia mlipuko wa virusi vya corona bila shaka.

Kwa mujibu wa jarida la Forbes mwaka 2021, utajiri wa Mabilionea 18 kutoka bara hili uliongezeka kwa $4.1b, ikiwa ni asilimia 12 zaidi ya mwaka mmoja uliopita.

Kwa miaka kumi mfululizo Aliko Dangote kutoka Nigeria ndiye mtu tajiri zaidi barani Afrika akiwa na utajiri wenye thamani $12.1b.

Thamani hiyo imepanda kwa dola bilioni 2, ikilinganishwa na mwaka jana kutokana na kupanda kwa asilimia 30 ya bei za hisa za kampuni ya simiti ya Dangote kulingana na Forbes.

• Orodha mpya ya mabilionea 20 wa Afrika yatangazwa

Mtu wa pili kwa utajiri ni Nassef Sawiris wa Misri ambaye mali yake kubwa ni asilimia sita ya hisa katika kampuni ya Addidas.

Katika nafasi ya tatu ni Nicky Oppeheimer wa Afrika Kusini ambaye alirithi hisa katika kampuni ya Almasi ya DeBeers na kusimamia kampuni hiyo hadi mwaka 2012 wakati alipouza asilimia 40 ya hisa za familia yake katika kampuni ya DeBeers kwa kampuni ya kuchimba madini ya AngloAmerican kwa $5.1 billioni.

Mwengine aliyetajirika mwaka huu ni mfanyabiashara mwengine wa simiti, Abdulsamad Rabiu.

Hisa zake katika kampuni ya simiti ya BUA PLC ambayo iliorodheshwa katika soko la hisa la Nigeria mwezi Januari, zimepanda maradufu kwa thamani katika kipindi cha mwaka mmoja uliopita.

Hatua hiyo iliongeza thamani ya Rabiu kwa asilimia 77 hadi kufikia $5.5 billioni.

Kitu kimoja muhimu ni kwamba Rabiu na mwanawe wanamiliki asilimia 97 ya kampuni hiyo na kuifanya kupata umaarufu.

Soko la hisa la Nigeria linahitaji asilimia 20 ama zaidi ya hisa za kampuni kuuzwa kwa raia ama hisa hizo ziwe na thamani ya dola milioni 50 ili kuwa na hakika.

Msemaji wa soko la hisa la Nigeria aliambia Forbes kwamba kampuni ya simiti ya BUA inaafikia sharti la pili – Kwamba Forbes hutoa punguzo la thamani ya hisa wakati hisa hizo zilizouzwa kwa raia zipo chini ya asilimia 5.

Bilionea wa pekee kutoka Afrika mashariki aliyeorodheshwa katika orodha hiyo ya Forbes ni Mfanyabiashara wa Tanzania Mohammed Dewji aliyechukua nafasi ya 13. Dewji ana thamani ya dola bilioni 1.6 kulingana na ripoti hiyo ya jarida la Forbes.

Wanawake wawili wa pekee walioorodheshwa mabilionea kutoka Afrika mwaka 2020 wameshuka katika orodha hiyo.

Kulingana na Forbes, thamani ya Folonrusho Alakija kutoka Nigeria , anayemiliki kampuni ya kuchimba mafuta ilishuka chini ya dola bilioni moja kutokana na bei ya chini ya mafuta.

Isabel dos Santos ambaye tangu 2013 amekuwa mwanamke tajiri zaidi barani Afrika alishuka kwa thamani kutokana na maamuzi kadhaa ya mahakama ambayo yalipiga tanji mali yake nchini Angola na Portugal.

Mabilionea hao 10 kutoka Afrika wanatoka kutoka mataifa saba tofauti .

Afrika Kusini na Misri ina mabilionea watano, ikifuatiwa na Nigeria ilio na watatu na Morocco ilio na wawili.

Bill na Melinda Gates wametangaza kwamba wanatalakiana baada ya ndoa yao ya miaka 27 iliyowapa watoto watatu.

Kupitia ujumbe katika twitter wamesema: “Baada ya kufikiria sana na kufanya kazi nyingi juu ya uhusiano wetu, tumefanya uamuzi wa kumaliza ndoa yetu,” wawili hao walisema katika ujumbe wa twitter .

Walikutana kwa mara ya kwanza miaka ya 1980 wakati Melinda alipojiunga na kampuni ya Bill ya Microsoft.

Wanandoa hao mabilionea wana watoto watatu na kwa pamoja wanaendesha Wakfu wa Bill & Melinda Gates.

Bill Gates ndiye mtu wa nne tajiri zaidi ulimwenguni, kulingana na Forbes, na ana mali ya thamani ya $ 124bn (£ 89bn).

Aliwapongeza madaktari waliomhudumia Mali na Morocco, “ambao ujuzi wao ni chanzo cha matokeo mema ya ujauzito huu”.

Mimba ya Bi Cisse imeshangaza taifa hilo la Afrika Magharibi na imewavutia baadhi ya wakuu wa nchi hiyo – huku baadhi yao wakisafiri had Morocco alipohitaji utunzi wa kitaalamu, shirika la habari la Reuters liliripoti.

Msemaji wa wizara ya afya ya Morocco, Rachid Koudhari, ameliambia shirika la habari ya AFP kwamba hakujua uzazi wa aina hiyo hutokea nchini humo.

Hatua hiyo ni kutokana na kuwepo kwa ongezeko la maambukizi ya ugonjwa wa Covid-19 nchini India.

Kwa sasa India inakabiliwa na janga kubwa la virusi vya corona.

Hospitali zimelemewa kwa kuwa na wagonjwa wengi na ripoti za watu kufariki mitaani zikiongezeka.

Mataifa ya Afrika yanategemea kupata chanjo kutoka India kwa kutumiwa mpango wa Covax . Ingawa ongezeko la maambukizi limesababishwa kupiga marufuku usafirishaji wa chanjo hizo na kuangazia watu wake kwanza.

Wasafiri ambao ni wakaazi wa Tanzania wataruhiswa kujitenga kwa siku 14 katika nyumba zao wenyewe.

Mwezi mei mwaka jana Tanzania iliondoa karantini ya lazima kwa wasafiri kutaka nje ya nchi hiyo na badala yake wakatangaza kuwa kutafanyika vipimo vya ugonjwa huo.

On the continuum of truly dominant, generational figures who present physical challenges that don’t have any answer, Zion Williamson might already be the NBA’s most irrepressible force since Shaquille O’Neal. At only 20 years old, Williamson isn’t just averaging 27.1 points on 61.4% shooting while attempting more free throws than any other player—he’s doing it without even pretending to keep defenders honest outside the lane.

In only his second season, Williamson is more proficient in the restricted area than any player since at least 1997, and, naturally, leads the entire league with 20.3 paint points per game. It’s a number nobody has sniffed since O’Neal’s championship years in L.A. (For context, LeBron James has never topped 15 points in the paint per game.)

But there’s another critical connection between O’Neal and Williamson. What made Shaq so singular was that in addition to flummoxing the opposing team, he also made life extremely hard on referees. “You would come off the floor with Shaq when you had that matchup for the whole game and your head was splitting,” says Don Vaden, a former NBA referee who worked more than 900 games and served as the NBA’s director of officials from 2011 to 2016. “You had a migraine.”

Inside the court’s most coveted space, where ground is hardly ever conceded without precipitous contact, O’Neal was nearly as hard to officiate as he was to guard. It led Sports Illustrated to report an entire feature back in 2001 that asked “has the Los Angeles Lakers superstar become unrefereeable?”

Two decades later, Williamson is generating some of those same nightly conundrums in his own remarkable way. He’s a novel test for officials who, along with everybody else, have never seen a player pull off the same physical feats he consistently does. Watching him play basketball is to look at evolution succeed in real time.

“There’s a lot of people that are 6′ 6″, 6′ 7″, 6′ 8″, 6′ 9″, but there’s nobody that’s 284 [pounds] and moves with the speed, quickness, agility that he does,” Vaden says. “Zion is one of the most powerful players I’ve ever seen.”

In 2018, Vaden stepped down as the WNBA’s director of officials and has since worked as a consultant for teams and players around basketball. On an average day, he takes in two or three NBA games. (Last week, he texted me from his seat in one arena while simultaneously watching a different game on his iPad.)

In addition to O’Neal, two players Vaden remembers being a distinct challenge were Charles Barkley and Karl Malone. Since, several others have been tricky: LeBron, James Harden, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, etc. But Williamson is unique in that just about all of his most impactful plays are abrupt and at the rim. When compared with O’Neal, their respective eras are a huge factor in separating how exactly they were so tough for officials: changing rules have altered defensive strategy.

O’Neal was almost always matched up with one defender who he’d battle for position before someone passed him the ball. (Zone defense wasn’t legalized until the 2001–02 season.) The fight would continue after he caught it, and again when he’d kick the ball back out and repost. There was a perpetual gray area, but only one of the game’s three referees usually dealt with it on any given possession.

It’s different with Williamson, who doesn’t plant his flag on the block like O’Neal did. Instead, often moonlighting as a point guard, he’ll either drive the ball from the perimeter or catch a pass 15 feet out and then rumble in from there. By the time he reaches the basket, more than one defender will in all likelihood have had a chance to slow him down, complicating what officials have to deal with before a point of contact is made.

That uncanny combination of size and speed impacts the anticipatory decisions officials normally make. The three basic elements of refereeing are location adjustment, position adjustment and vision adjustment. There’s a lead official (somewhere along the baseline, ideally on the strong side), a slot official (free throw extended, near the sideline), and a trailer. Possessions involving Zion tweak their individual responsibilities a bit and force all three to focus on spots they otherwise don’t.

“When [the Pelicans] swing it back to the weak side, and Zion puts it down going to the basket, the lead doesn’t have a chance to get there,” Vaden says. “And the slot is basically trying to referee that play by himself—with help, but there’s a lot more pressure on [them] that way.”

In these spots, the lead official often has no choice but to observe from the opposite side of the lane, which isn’t preferable. Even still, referees don’t stare at Williamson so much as they focus on different defenders who appear on his path to the rim.

“You’re picking up the defender that can hurt you the most, and with Zion a lot of times that defender is changing from primary to help to secondary,” Vaden says. “And to me that’s the reason why he is so difficult to referee, because there’s multiple defenders involved almost every time. And then he’s always getting his own rebound. So now you’ve got a fourth layer. You got the rebounding situation.”

Depending on your perspective (i.e., which team you work for), Zion draws either too many fouls or not nearly enough. Frustration on behalf of those who subscribe to the latter spilled overboard at the end of a recent loss against the Denver Nuggets, when Nikola Jokić appeared to smack Williamson’s wrist at the rim near the end of a one possession game. No whistle blew. The following day, the game’s two-minute report corrected the non-call and said Jokić should’ve been called for a personal foul.

Afterward, Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy expressed his displeasure with how his best player has been officiated all year. “He gets to the free throw line a lot, and I’ve had referees say to me, ‘How many free throws has he shot?’ and it’s a stupid question. It doesn’t matter. Call it every single time he gets fouled. That’s all your job is,” Van Gundy told reporters. “It’s not a matter of, ‘Oh, he shot eight free throws,’ or,’’Oh, he shot 10 free throws.’ Some nights he should shoot 20. So call it. That’s all. Just call it. What more does he have to do to get those calls? … I do think strength gets punished in this league a lot more than quickness. If you’re able to go through contact a little bit, it’s called differently.”

That play was singled out because of when it occurred and the stakes involved, but watch any Pelicans game from start to finish and what you’ll see are a series of question marks created by one of the league’s strongest players. “He’s going to the rim every time,” Lonzo Ball told reporters. “There are fouls; they aren’t calling them.” Nobody seeks out close-quarters combat as often as Williamson does, and arguably nobody puts more pressure on those who have to adjudicate a rule book that wasn’t written with the thought that someone this fast and powerful would ever exist.

“When he dunks the ball, you or I can reach out and hit him as hard as we want to, he’s not even gonna feel it. He’s going to be able to finish with power. And from a referee standpoint, they’re trying to get their eyes to the point of contact, but he goes through it so powerful that you can’t tell if he’s hit or not,” Vaden says. “Most of the time, you’re not gonna see it until you go to replay or go to the film session later and look at it in slow motion to see if there is actually contact or not.”

To his credit, Zion has taken all of this in stride. “I gotta earn my respect,” he said after the Nuggets loss. “I’m only in year two. Gotta get a couple more years under my belt and hopefully things change with that.”

Williamson is patient now, at the dawn of a Hall of Fame career, with a skill set that will (probably) diversify and a roster that will (hopefully) complement him better than New Orleans’s current one does. But the number of judgement calls that are created by his unprecedented blend of aggression, explosion, size and strength aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Because of those split-second decisions, neither will the spotlight that hovers over Zion’s relationship with the whistle. It isn’t the most important variable to keep an eye on as his impossibly thrilling career continues to unfold, but it’s also far from insignificant in a very specific way.

WHAT DO THE MAGIC HAVE?

Orlando ended April with the NBA’s second-worst offense and third-worst defense. Literal months into an extensive rebuild, the franchise car keys have been handed to a collection of inexperienced prospects who, at first glance, are diametrically opposed to more coveted positional archetypes found in today’s NBA. It’s an understandable mess.

Cole Anthony, Wendell Carter Jr., Chuma Okeke, R.J. Hampton and Mo Bamba are the active members of an intriguing, talented and flawed youth movement. Jonathan Isaac and Markelle Fultz have been out of sight, out of mind all season, but still factor into the Magic’s long-term plans.

In that list, there are no wings. None of the guards or bigs are knockdown shooters. And, most importantly, there is no obvious star (though Isaac may be one before it’s all said and done). But let’s take a quick peek into the future, where this year’s draft may be Orlando’s most important since Dwight Howard was selected. Is their next true centerpiece months away from climbing aboard? And, a more intriguing question, how many of this current roster’s pieces are good enough to surround him with?

As ESPN’s Mike Schmitz said on a recent episode of The Hoop Collective, some believe there are five No. 1–caliber picks in this year’s draft. Now, remember that blockbuster deadline-day trade the Magic made with the Bulls, when—for the purpose of this conversation—Nikola Vucevic was swapped for two first-round picks?

The pick Chicago owes Orlando in this year’s draft is top-four protected. But given the Bulls’ collapse (they won’t be qualifying for the play-in tournament), the door is technically open for not one, but two franchise-altering talents. It’s tempting to ignore the Magic, but keep an eye on how their youngsters play. They feel irrelevant right now, but could be important before you know it.

In Tuesday’s game, Devin Booker and Chris Paul led the way by scoring 31 and 23 points, respectively, to lead the Suns to their fifth straight win.

The Suns couldn’t get much separation from the short-handed Cavaliers during regulation, even though Cleveland was missing six players, including starting point guard Darius Garland. It wasn’t until overtime that the Suns put the game away, scoring the first 15 points to open up a 129-114 lead.

“Our team, we’ve been in so many of these situations with this group this season,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “So we don’t take it for granted, but I think there is some confidence that we can pull games out like that. I didn’t expect at 15-0 run, whatever it was. Feeling at home

Tim Hardaway Jr. has always felt at home when playing in Miami. After all, he starred at Miami Palmetto Senior High and got to shoot around on the courts at American Airlines Arena as a kid while his dad played six seasons with the Heat.

Hardaway Jr. hit 10 3-pointers and scored 36 points to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 127-113 win over the Miami Heat. Hardaway tied the Mavericks franchise record for 3’s in a game and became the third player to ever make that many in a game against Miami.

An MVP threepeat?

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is widely viewed as the MVP frontrunner, but Giannis Antetokounmpo could steal a few first-place votes.

After hovering just above .500 for the first two months of the season, the Milwaukee Bucks are back in the mix for one of the top seeds in the Eastern Conference. After sweeping back-to-back games with the Brooklyn Nets, the Bucks are just 1½ games behind the No. 2 Nets. They are 3 games behind No. 1 Philadelphia.

The main reason for the Bucks’ resurgence is Antetokounmpo. He is averaging 28.5 points, 11.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists for the Bucks this season, and he carried the Bucks in the two-game series against the Nets with 36 points in Tuesday’s game after scoring 49 in Sunday’s win.

Antetokounmpo’s stats are comparable to his two MVP campaigns. But only three players in league history have won three consecutive MVP awards: Bill Russell (1961-63), Wilt Chamberlain (1966-68) and Larry Bird (1984-86).

Jokic is the odds-on favorite to win his first MVP. Sending a message

After a poor shooting night in which he hit just 3 of 18 in Monday’s loss to the Golden State Warriors, New Orleans Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball texted an apology to Zion Williamson vowing to do better.

“I just knew I let my team down and I wasn’t going to do that two nights in a row,” Ball said on the motivations for the text. “I know the type of player I am and I believe in myself. I was very confident coming into tonight. I knew I wasn’t going to shoot 3-of-18 again. I just wanted to let (Zion) know I was going to be there with him tonight and I did my best doing that.”

Game of the night: Wizards at Bucks

Wizards guard Russell Westbrook has become appointment television. Westbrook’s eye-popping stat line in Monday’s win over the Indiana Pacers — 14 points, 21 rebounds, 24 assists — was his 18th triple-double in the past 22 games. Westbrook is now just three short of Oscar Robertson’s record total of 181. The Bucks are pretty much locked in the No. 3 seed and are in playoff-prep mode at this point.
