US petrol supplies tighten after Colonial Pipeline hack

A consumer pumps gas at a Costco petrol station in Atlanta on 11 May.

US motorists have been urged to not hoard fuel as supplies tighten due to a major pipeline remaining shut after a cyber-attack.

Some drivers in the south east were seen stocking up as petrol stations began running dry and prices rose.

The average price for petrol was the highest on Tuesday since November 2014, at $2.98 (£2.11) per gallon, the American Automobile Association said.

North Carolina, Virginia and Florida have declared a state of emergency.

But US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said there was no need for motorists to hoard petrol.

Ms Granholm said there was not a shortage but a supply “crunch” in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and southern Virginia, regions that typically rely on Colonial for fuel.https://buy.tinypass.com/checkout/template/cacheableShow?aid=tYOkq7qlAI&templateId=OTBYI8Q89QWC&templateVariantId=OTV0YFYSXVQWV&offerId=fakeOfferId&experienceId=EXAWX60BX4NU&iframeId=offer_0e763acc7b457c03340a-0&displayMode=inline&widget=template

Colonial attack

A ransomware cyber-attack on Friday forced Colonial Pipeline to shut down the main part of its network.

The operator has forecast that it will not substantially restore operations of the 5,500-mile (8,900km) pipeline network that supplies nearly half of the East Coast’s fuel until the end of the week.

The FBI has accused a criminal gang called DarkSide of the ransomware attack.

The gang is believed to be based in Russia or Eastern Europe and avoids targeting computers that use languages from former Soviet republics, cyber experts said.

Ransomware is a type of malware designed to lock computers by encrypting data and demanding payment to regain access.

Russia’s embassy in the US rejected speculation that the country’s government was behind the attack.

President Joe Biden a day earlier said there was no evidence so far that Russia was responsible.

If the general public or politicians ever needed proof of how devastating cyber-attacks can be, this hack will more than suffice: chaos at the pumps, states of emergency declared and the White House calling for calm.

And this is just the stuff we’re being told about.

In Colonial Pipeline’s latest press update, we’re given hints about the mayhem inside the company.

With high-tech sensors and safety systems taken offline, the firm says it’s hired dozens of staff to walk or drive the 5,000-mile length of the pipeline every day.

It’s also deployed helicopters to check on the pipes and a growing fleet of delivery trucks.

Another clue to the chaos is that the company’s website has been periodically taken offline.

Colonial says this is a separate problem, but tellingly it has now blocked all traffic from outside of the US.

Even the hackers themselves seem surprised by the damage they’ve caused.

According to new research from cyber-security company FireEye, the hackers known as Darkside launched global crime spree in August last year, raking in millions from organisations in more than 15 countries.

But this hack seems like it may have crossed some sort of line even for these hardened criminals. The true test of their morals, though, will depend on whether or not they will continue the extort the company or help it recover.

Emergency measures

More than 7% of petrol stations in Virginia and 5% in North Carolina were out of fuel on Tuesday as demand jumped 20%, tracking firm GasBuddy said.

On Tuesday, the government stepped in to issue an emergency fuel waiver lasting one week, designed to help alleviate any shortages.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said the move, which relaxes some rules usually applied to fuel, would run until 18 May in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC.

In addition, Georgia suspended sales tax on petrol until Saturday.

On Monday North Carolina declared a state of emergency and temporarily suspended vehicle fuel regulations “to ensure adequate fuel supply supplies throughout the state”.

While the pipeline outage is having short-term consequences in some regions, some experts believe the longer term impact will be small.

“Markets will go crazy, but two weeks later no one knows it happened,” said Chuck Watson, director of research at Enki, which studies the economic effects of natural and other disasters.

Price rises

Fuel prices were expected to rise with the start of the summer driving season, although the US Energy Information Administration said on Tuesday that the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic would “significantly affect petroleum markets in the summer of 2021”.

The pipeline shutdown contributed to the rise in fuel prices, the AAA said.

“We might see the delivery challenges due to the attack add a few cents to the expected increase in the national average,” a spokesperson added.

Two more MLS teams appeared in the CONCACAF Champions League this Wednesday night. Both of them played without winners with the respective rivals from Mexico – Portland Timbers with Club America, 1-1 and the MLS champs, Columbus Crew with Monterrey, 2-2.

LAFC In the Champions League Semis, Atlanta Eliminated by Club America

Portland’s Late Goal of Hope

Timbers have scored in the seventh minute of the injury time to avoid a defeat against Club America. To make it even more dramatic, the hosts netted from a penalty handed to them due to the handball of one of Club America’s players.

The visiting side also scored from the penalty in the injury time, only in the first half. Claudio Bravo brought down one of the rivals’ players in the box, which resulted in the referee pointing towards the spot. Roger Martinez didn’t waste such a present but scored in 45+1 to shock the home team.

Even though Portland constantly attacked during the second half, they couldn’t score until the last moments of the match. There were several incredibly good chances for the hosts to net, but their players were either offside or inaccurate. It needs to be mentioned that Timbers had some of their crucial players injured for this match – Sebastian Blanco, Jeremy Ebobisse, Jaroslaw Niezgoda, and several others were all out.

Columbus Drops a Win in the Last Moments

In the other game of the night, the MLS champions, Columbus Crew was left empty-handed in the last minute of their clash with Monterrey. Jose Alvarado’s stunner in the third minute of the injury time saw the guests leveling the score at 2-2, breaking the hearts of the home team’s players and fans.

Previously, the Crew managed to come back from behind and turn the result upside down with Lucas Zelrayan’s goal in the 87th minute of the game. The Crew had a 2-1 led, and it looked as they controlled the situation. However, the feisty Mexican team didn’t surrender, and that earned them a big goal in the last moments.

Club America took the lead in the ninth minute with Ake Loba using a cardinal mistake of Aboubacar Keita. Milton Valenzuela made things even in the 65th minute after Zelarayan’s assist.

In yesterday’s games, Toronto FC lost to Cruz Azul, 1-3, and Philadelphia Union defeated Atlanta United in Georgia, 0-3.

Philadelphia Union looking for points, not revenge against New England Revolution

The Philadelphia Union and New England Revolution clashed six times in the truncated 2020 season, an abnormally high number due to regional play when the season resumed during the COVID-19 pandemic. It became a bit of a running joke.

Philly enjoyed the better of New England on most occasions, winning four and drawing one of the six. But their lone loss happened to end their season.

Bruce Arena’s Revs traveled to Subaru Park for round one of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and outplayed the Supporters’ Shield winners, pulling off an upset on the road. The two are about to play one another for the first time in 2021, but Union head coach Jim Curtin isn’t focused on any notion of revenge.

“This game is an opportunity for three points, it’s not an opportunity to avenge last year in the playoffs or anything like that,” Curtin told media during a virtual press conference. “Just two different teams fighting for points, last season is gone.”

Gone but not forgotten, of course.

“It hurts, when a team ends your season it stays with you,” Curtin said. “It hurts for a while, that part is hard. We got the better of them in the regular season, which led to our Supporters’ Shield, but in the most important game they beat us. They outplayed us and deserved to win. But it’s a new year, new challenge.”

The Union’s regular season success against the Revs led Bruce Arena to joke that they deserved credit for the Shield too, given the Union won three of the four regular season meetings (as well as a knockout round victory at the MLS is Back Tournament).

Both teams have changed.

Philadelphia transferred two MLS Best XI honorees in January, with Brenden Aaronson heading to RB Salzburg and Mark McKenzie to KRC Genk. The Revs were without Carles Gil for much of the time the two faced in 2020, someone Curtin called among the very most under-appreciated players in the league. New England are a different team with their talisman on the pitch, as he is expected to be on Wednesday (7:30 pm ET | MLS live on ESPN+).

“The Revs are the most dangerous and best team we’ve scouted this year,” Curtin said. “All of their performances, even in their recent losses. They’re one of the strongest teams in the conference, if not the league, so we’ll have our hands full. We can make the joke about how many times we’ve played them, obviously last year was six. Every game was high intensity, two really good teams competing. The margins were very tight in all, I expect this game to be no different.”

When might Daniel Gazdag debut?

Daniel Gazdag - Philadelphia Union

The Union officially announced the signing of Hungary international Daniel Gazdag on Tuesday. With uncertainty around the visa process and travel during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the expectation that the midfielder is called up to Hungary’s squad at the European Championships in June, that fans would have to wait months to see their new star.

Philly are hopeful, though, that he may debut before departing for national team duty following MLS’s break in play in June.

“Our goal is to get him in as quickly as possible, to squeeze in and try to get him to play,” Curtin said. “Hope and wish for D.C. (on May 23), maybe even Red Bulls (May 15), possibly Portland (May 30). In all likelihood he’ll be called into the Euros and he’ll miss time with us. … We have to be smart about not giving him too much, too soon. We’ll find time for him to recover. I do know we’ll be a better team with him on the field, we have to find that balance.”

The game against Portland’s is Philly’s last until June 20.

“That’s the hope, yeah,” Curtin said. “I hope he gets here tomorrow. But I know how difficult the visa process is this year. Hopefully he can help us before this June break.”

If he’s called up to Hungary’s squad for the Euros as expected, the earliest his team could be eliminated is after their final group stage game on June 23.

LaMelo Ball got most embarrassing technical foul of NBA season (Video)

Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball got a technical in Tuesday’s game and it might be the least glamorous foul ever.a person on a court© Provided by Fansided

Whenever Ball makes waves in the league, it’s usually hype for his Rookie of the Year performances. He’s been playing so well for Charlotte lately that it’s hard to believe he’s only 19. So when Ball got called for a technical foul against the Denver Nuggets, most fans were scratching their heads. What did the kid do?

After drawing a foul on a drive to the rim, Ball was whistled for what seems to be excessive physical contact with a referee. Watch the video and judge for yourself:

It seems like after Ball’s layup attempt, he stumbled into the game official who held out his arm to stop Ball from falling. In response, Ball roughly pushes the referee’s arm away, which the referee mistook as excessive force…maybe? It’s very unclear.

Either way, the referees thought Ball deserved the technical, and MVP frontrunner Nikola Jokic scores one to extend the Nuggets lead in the third quarter.

LaMelo Ball won’t be proud of his technical foul…on a referee

Denver went on to win the game against the Hornets, who currently sit eighth in the Eastern Conference. Ball, perhaps jolted by that incident, recorded just five points in the game along with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Five Hornets players recorded double-digit points, but it wasn’t enough to stop Jokic and company.

The Hornets’ final three season games are against the Clippers, Knicks, and Wizards, which will be must-win games if they want to secure the best seeds in the play-in format. Barring any other technicals, Ball will be looking forward to play some entertaining basketball and never commit an embarrassing foul like that again.

According to Tuesday’s edition of Politico Playbook, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is facing backlash from House Republicans for his push to oust Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) from leadership. Playbook reports that the move is being viewed by some GOP members (and not just moderate “Adam Kinzinger types,” Politico reports) as McCarthy throwing his own colleague to the “MAGA wolves” to secure the backing of former President Donald Trump in his potential bid for speaker in 2022.

“Kevin McCarthy has pissed off enough members of his own conference that he’s going to have to go back to his former days as a whip to try to figure out where his votes are [to become speaker],” an unnamed GOP member of Congress told Politico. The unidentified representative — whom Politico billed as a perceived McCarthy ally — added, “You have people like me — who are here to do the right thing for all the right reasons and have an expectation of leadership — that are, shall we say, disgusted with the internal squabbling that results from having weak leadership. And it is weak leadership. Straight up.”

A senior aide to a conservative GOP House member also told Politico that McCarthy’s back-and-forth on whether or not the former president is complicit in the Capitol riot.

“He’s flip-flopped on [whether it’s] Trump’s fault, it’s not Trump’s fault. … It seems like he doesn’t have the backbone to lead,” the aide told Politico. “He bends to political pressure. It’s tough to do when you’re Speaker. You have to lead.”

McCarthy sent a letter to his GOP House colleagues Monday spelling out his reasons for setting the vote to oust Cheney.

“It’s clear that we need to make a change,” McCarthy wrote.

Based on the Politico report, the minority leader might want to be careful what he wishes for.The post Numerous GOP House Members Reportedly ‘Pissed Off’ at McCarthy Over Cheney Fiasco: ‘Weak Leadership. Straight Up.’ first appeared on Mediaite.

Draymond Green Has Telling Response To DPOY Question

Ted Cruz Scrolls Phone, Ignoring Klobuchar As She Rebukes Him at Senate…Elderly Man Dies After Being Punched in Dunkin’ Donuts Over Racial Slur…

Over the last several seasons, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been one of the most effective defenders in the NBA.Draymond Green standing in front of a building: draymond green during game 4© Provided by The Spun draymond green during game 4

Green already has one Defensive Player of the Year Award from 2017 to show for his efforts, and by the looks of things, he feels he’s worthy of winning another one this year. Most analysts expect the honor will go to either Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz or Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons.

After last night’s game, Green was asked by Warriors writer Anthony Slater who he thinks should be DPOY. Green didn’t answer directly, but how he did respond said it all.

Green has always been confident in his abilities, to say the least. At 31, he remains one of the most versatile and impactful defenders in the game.

Golden State’s defense has been strong this season, despite the fact that the team’s roster is down from what it was during its dynastic run. Green has a large hand in that.

He may not win Defensive Player of the Year, but Green has had no problem earning respect around the league for his work on that side of the ball.

Here’s Some Stephen Curry and Draymond Green Slander

Florida Man Jailed for Punching Fellow Customer In Mask Dispute: ‘DeSantis…Ted Cruz Scrolls Phone, Ignoring Klobuchar As She Rebukes Him at Senate…

The Golden State Warriors are headed to the NBA play-in tournament. They will finish the regular season with the eighth- or ninth-best record in the NBA. They will do that with the probable league scoring champion, and if you ask Draymond Green, the Defensive Player of the Year.a man holding a basketball: Dray and Steph | Daniel Shirey/Getty Images© Provided by The Big Lead Dray and Steph | Daniel Shirey/Getty Imageshttps://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-

Now, if you were to tell me a team would have a scoring champ and the most important defender in the NBA, I would assume they would be very good. Not three games over .500 in the last week of the season. I also would think a team with the best defensive player wouldn’t be surrendering the 19th-most points per game in the entire league.

That’s probably because no team with a DPOY has had worse than the 11th-best defense in the league over the last decade. Or been an 8-seed or lower. So much like Curry on the offensive end of the court, Green is looking to make history.

Giannis Antetokounmpo won DPOY last season and the Bucks had the eighth-best defense. The Bucks had the best record in basketball.

Rudy Gobert had won the previous two awards as the Jazz had top five defenses both times.

Back in 2011, the award was won by Dwight Howard. The Orlando Magic had the fourth-best scoring defense in the NBA and were a 4-seed.

Gallery: The 15 worst seasons in NBA history (SMG)

a man playing a game of baseball: The Houston Rockets are having an awful season after the end of the James Harden era, winning only 16 games as of May 11 and clinching the best odds in the NBA lottery. But while victories have been few and far between in Houston, the Rockets don't have a claim on being one of the worst teams in NBA history. Their 16 (and counting?) victories puts them behind at least 25 teams from the past, including these 15.

Tyson Chandler won the award in 2012 when the Knicks were a 7-seed. They had the 11th-best defense in the NBA. They also lost in the first round.

Memphis had the best defense in the NBA in 2013 and finished fifth in the West when Marc Gasol won.

Joakim Noah won in ’14 when the Bulls had the best defense and were third in the East.

In ’15 and ’16 Kawhi Leonard won while the Spurs had the number three (6-seed) and number one (2-seed) defenses.

In ’17, Draymond Green won DPOY. The Warriors had the best record in the West, the 11th-best defense and won the title. It was the first time the Defensive Player of the Year won the title since Kevin Garnett did it with the Boston Celtics in 2008.

Ben Wallace won the award four times in five years in the early 2000s with the Detroit Pistons winning the NBA title the one year he didn’t. Hakeem Olajuwon and Dennis Rodman both one DPOY during one of their championship seasons. Michael Cooper also pulled off the double trophy in ’86-’87.

So what does all this mean? Nothing, really. The Defensive Player of the Year comes from all sorts of teams who have very different resumes. It is just that the idea of the DPOY and scoring leaders being on the same team and fighting for the 8-seed is pretty funny.

If anything, it says a whole lot about Klay Thompson. Klay hasn’t played since 2019. The Warriors had been to five consecutive NBA Finals when he was injured. Last year they went 15-50 without Thompson (and mostly without Curry). This year they are three games over .500 and a half-game up on the Memphis Grizzlies with Curry and Green. You throw a healthy Klay Thompson in the mix and suddenly they’re hosting a first-round playoff series.

Surely, ’15-’16 Coach of the Year Steve Kerr could actually get something out of the roster then.

New Vaccine Could Stop Future Coronaviruses

At a time when 35 percent of eligible adults have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and the U.S. government is offering free Uber and Lyft rides to vaccination sites, there are researchers who are focused on what comes next. A new vaccine developed by the Duke Human Vaccine Institute could help fight COVID-19 and its variants. It could also be the solution we need for future pandemics.a man is using his cell phone: New Vaccine Could Stop Future Pandemics© Unsplash New Vaccine Could Stop Future Pandemics

“We began this work last spring with the understanding that, like all viruses, mutations would occur in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19,” Barton F. Haynes, M.D., director of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVI) told Nature.

The idea behind the new vaccine is that it exploits a weak spot in coronaviruses, a receptor-binding domain on the spike that links viruses to receptors in human cells.
